Why I STOPPED Doing Morning Pages | When A Good Thing Stops Being Good

I used to love doing Morning Pages. Until I realized they were no longer helping me. Here’s who I think Morning Pages are best for, and when I think you should stop doing them, too.

Before you watch this video you should know that I LOVE Morning Pages…for some people and some stages.

Morning Pages, if you’re not familiar with the concept, is an exercise first taught by Julia Cameron in the book The Artist’s Way, she teaches this as a tool for creativity and I’ve also found it as an amazing tool for personal development. But what exactly are Morning Pages? As she says in the book, these are three pages of long handwriting strictly stream of consciousness…

“Oh god another morning… I have nothing to say… I need to wash the curtains… Did I get my laundry yesterday? Blah blah blah”.

She emphasizes that there’s no wrong way to do the Morning Pages however they’re not meant to be art or even writing, but just brain drain. They’re not supposed to sound smart and you’re not supposed to re-read them. You’re just supposed to get it all out on paper; no censoring, no filtering, no negotiating, no re-reading… just 3 pages every single morning.

I first started the Morning Pages over 10 years ago and they were instrumental to really beginning the personal development work that I’ve been able to do since then.

I think that if I didn’t have this tool – this ability to just get the nonsense, the static, the noise, the tornado of thoughts and emotions out of my head and onto paper, I wouldn’t have been able to do half the things that I was able to do.

So join me over on YouTube and I’ll share with you why I STOPPED doing Morning Pages after YEARS of loving it. I love Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way…but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. And Morning Pages have a downside.
